You read that title correctly, I turned 40 in September! I may still be in a bit of denial but hey, I hear 40 is the new 30. I think the best thing any woman can give themselves for their 40th birthday is a date with a mammogram!
We all hear the stats, that 1 in 8 women will develop breast cancer in their life! Just look at your circle of friends. That could be one of them or possibly you. I know the idea of getting your breast squished down to an IHOP pancake does not sound like the most fun gift to yourself, but that small uncomfortable amount of time to check on your breast health is totally worth it to me.
I have two friends that were both diagnosed in their early years. One in their 30’s and the other in their early 40’s. That is something I would have never imagined could happen, but it does. Their early detection was key in fighting their breast cancer. Both are cancer free and living full/healthy lives! I am sure everyone of you reading this are picturing the women you know that have had or are going through breast cancer. It affects us all!
With the amount of breast cancer surrounding us I’m amazed at the number of women in their 40’s that have not had their mammogram yet or women that do not get an annual mammogram. I heard a recent breast cancer survivor say, this should be one of the most important appointments you make for yourself every year! Why is it that we will never miss a hair appointment or that regular nail appointment but we don’t treat our mammogram the same? It’s actually easier to schedule a mammogram than a hair appointment these days haha.
I wanted to write this to take you on my mammogram journey to help put your minds at ease. I am hopeful it will spark one of you to schedule your routine mammogram or to remind the women in your life to get theirs and to take ownership of your breast health!
October 18th is Happy Birthday to me! Stay tuned for Part 2 …”Gift Remorse”, kidding!
